Jax didn’t smile. He turned her again, smooth and effortless, guiding her deeper into the shadowed part of the garden while the music played on. “Not impossible,” he said. “Just very dangerous.” Lena’s stomach twisted hard. The hunger inside her stirred, almost like it was listening. Jax kept his voice calm, controlled, but every word carried weight. “The hunger you’ve been fighting… it’s not new. It’s in your blood.” “The Echo was enough to kill you for,” Jax said softly.

He sniffed, sniffed again, and felt hunger flood his body. Finally! Something to hunt. It had been so long since his last meal that Horth could barely remember what he had eaten. The short one? With all the bones? Or the long slithery thing? It hardly mattered. The metal world was different, but food was food, and he would hunt.

The hunger became a driving force, fueling my determination to overcome any obstacle in my path. I focused my gaze on the unappetizing food, contemplating the choices before me. Should I succumb to my hunger and eat, regardless of the distaste it brought? Or should I resist, holding onto my dignity, refusing to give my captors the satisfaction of seeing me weaken? In that moment, a spark of defiance ignited within me. I realized that my hunger was not just physical; it represented my craving for liberation, my yearning to reclaim my power. Brotherhood layered into every corner. If I open my mouth and say anything real, it will spiral. They will connect dots I am not ready to acknowledge out loud. So I push myself upright, planting my boots on the floor. “I am hungry. Come on, let’s go and eat something. It is almost lunch time.” Right on cue, my stomach growls, loud enough that Lucas snorts. I have not eaten since breakfast. I did not notice earlier. Too focused. Too distracted. Now the hunger hits all at once, sharp and undeniable.

But then I’d looked at the others. They were eating like beasts. Fenris had ripped a lamb apart with his bare hands, his fingers slick with grease as he tore meat from bone. The warriors around the table were no better, shouting and gnawing on ribs like they hadn't eaten in a month. Seeing that primal hunger had turned the food in my stomach into lead. Mina was still talking. Her voice was sharp and relentless, and it was starting to feel like static in my ears. I couldn't process the words anymore. I just wanted the noise to stop.

But something deeper stirred now. Hunger. At the mention of breakfast, my ears perked like a starving animal catching the scent of food. My mouth watered involuntarily, and I hated that it did. Hated that even in this twisted reality, my body still responded to basic needs. I hadn’t eaten since last night if not earlier and my stomach reminded me with a low, painful growl. Ronin heard it. Of course he did. Nothing escaped his notice. He stepped closer, his eyes dark but curious, like I was a thing worth observing. He tilted his head slightly, and to my surprise, his voice softened.

A baby born screaming, born old, born gone. Balance. Seven impossible things fed at once. Storm. Fire. Earth. Hunger. Null. Containment. Me. The root that holds. The land paid to make us. Now we pay to keep it. “It wants a harvest,” I say. Tastes like blood. “Seven lives. One for each vessel. Or it takes from Duskbane. From the pack. Years off everyone. Pups born wrong.” Quiet.
