It’s just… not what I was expecting ” He shrugged, flipping another page. “I keep telling you not to judge me with your assumptions.” “I'm sorry if my assumptions don't fit your personality,” I said, taking the seat across from him. “Why this book?” I asked, stealing the opportunity to know what the real Kael is like. “I like books that… make me think. And this one does.” “Think about what?” I asked, hoping my curiosity wasn't obvious. “Is this some sort of interview?” he asked, placing the book on the table without closing it.

A book was different. A book was permanent in a way that speeches were not. A book existed in the world independently of whether I was in a good place when it was read, independently of the specific room and the specific audience and the specific night. A book could be read by my children when they were old enough to read it. A book could be read by people who hated me, people who had opinions about what I should have done differently, people who had never experienced anything adjacent to what I was describing and would bring that absence to the reading. A book required a different kind of exposure than standing at a podium.
