Dee’s eyes faded back to normal as she returned to sit beside me. “The book,” she began slowly. “It was said to have been burned and destroyed centuries ago—but it chose its own fate.”

She had been so sure that this was the way forward, that breaking the curse would be as simple as deciphering the right spell. But the deeper they dug, the more elusive the answers seemed.
