The silence only grew heavier. Then… A faint scratching sound. I stopped walking. Scratch… Scratch… Scratch… The sound seemed to come from inside the walls. I frowned and stepped closer. Another scratch. This time it was louder. Then another. Then dozens. No… Hundreds. The entire wall vibrated ever so slightly. “No…” Hairline cracks of movement appeared beneath the decorative trim. Tiny black legs slipped through gaps no wider than a fingernail. One spider became five. Five became twenty. Twenty became so many I couldn’t count them. They poured from the walls like water escaping a broken dam.
