"How did you get in?"
He steps forward, once, then twice, each movement calculated, each sound of his soles on the parquet echoing like a countdown. The smell of him hits me before he's even close dark wood, burning spices, that hint of cold tobacco that always makes me think of moonless nights. My stomach knots.
"Locks have never stopped me, Elena."
He murmurs, his voice hoarse like torn velvet. His lips stretch into a smile that holds nothing reassuring.
"And neither have you, for that matter."
