They weren’t burning, not really, but they made my skin tingle like a thousand tiny needles. I swallowed hard and stepped into the circle.

My thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the revving engine. The car that pulled up was sleek, yet understated—at least by Charez standards. It was a Lucid Air Sapphire, a deep midnight blue with a glossy finish that reflected the morning sun like liquid metal. The design was sharp, modern, and deceptively simple, lacking the flamboyant gold accents and oversized grilles that typically adorned billionaire cars. But I knew better.

It was surrounded by a halo of tiny black onyx stones. “It’s… beautiful,” I breathed, my voice barely audible. Antonio smiled, clearly pleased with my reaction. “It’s one-of-a-kind,” he said proudly. “The sapphire is from Ceylon — known for its clarity. The setting is platinum, designed to last a lifetime.” Talon’s hand flexed ever so slightly on my back, and I could feel his eyes on me. “Try it on,” he said quietly, his voice low and rough.

And there, right in front of me, where the spark of light had started…was now a giant phoenix. Its wings spread wide in preparation of flight and its form magnificent. And right in the centre of its chest, was a blue sapphire. I was too busy admiring the beauty of the beast to notice the tiny details that I had missed before and then it was too late. The black fire spread out from the floor and engulfed the beast.
