Ziko’s body slumped forward, lifeless, crimson blooming across his chest like a cursed rose. Hunter stood still as his men: trained, merciless, silent, stepped in and cleaned up the mess. Not a single command was needed. They knew the drill. Blood was part of the foundation down here. Hunter lit a cigarette, the smoke curling from his lips like a hissed warning to anyone daring enough to cross him next. The bitter flavor of rage hadn’t dulled at all. If anything, it grew sharper with every passing second.

He selected a sleek black handgun, checked the magazine, and tucked it into the waistband of his pants at the small of his back. “I’m going to welcome an old friend,” he said darkly. I shivered, but it wasn’t from fear. It was from the sheer, electric intensity of the moment. We weren’t victims anymore. We were the hunters. I walked to the stairs, my head held high. Sebastian Vane had made a fatal error. He thought he was coming to kill a legacy. He was about to find out that the Hunter legacy didn’t die. It just reloaded.

I scenee Hunter walked near me. I could feel the weight of Hunter’s gaze on me, but I couldn’t bring myself to look up at him. I didn’t deserve to. Not after what I had done. The smell of smoke filled my lungs, burning my throat as I knelt there, pinned to the ground. I clung to the memory of Lisa’s last smile, the way she’d tried to touch my cheek with her dying breath, but even that memory was slipping away, replaced by the sight of her body turning to ash.

Pandora jumps into action, starts CPR. Malik floors the SUV. The SUV takes a bump and nearly crashes off the icy road. Kade yells, "We've got company!" I turn around. A black sedan. No lights, but very fast. Malik swerves. "They found us." Pandora shocks Cassian for a second time. Beep. Beep. His pulse returns. Slightly. Bullets hit the SUV. The rear window shatters. Kade returns fire. I block Cassian with my body.

For a brief second, I let myself forget why I was here. Then I took one step forward and I slipped, and then I collided with solid, unyielding muscle. I froze. A strong arm reached around my waist to steady me, and I froze. Slowly, painfully, my gaze lifted. Chase Hunter stood in front of me, shirtless, water trailing down his chest and clinging to his skin like it belonged there. His dark hair was damp, pushed back carelessly, droplets sliding from his jaw to his collarbone. His eyes met mine and his expression darkened instantly. The faint curve of his mouth disappeared, replaced by a look of pure revulsion, hatredl flaring in his frosty grey eyes like a sudden storm.
