Star, oblivious to our conversation, was playing with the hem of my shirt, humming softly to himself.
I reached down and brushed a hand over his hair. “You hear that, Star? Grandma wants to go make more money for you.”
He looked up at me, his big dark eyes blinking slowly. “Will she bring me steak?”
A laugh escaped me despite the heaviness in my chest. “Yes, she’ll bring you steak.”
His little mouth curved into a grin, satisfied with that answer.
After a moment, my mom got up from her seat and began tidying up the table. I stayed where I was, watching Star as he leaned against me, his small body warm against mine.
