It was almost full till last night. After that, she looked for bread. Even it was not there. She drank all milk when she didn’t find anything in the refrigerator that she wouldn’t have to cook. But she was still hungry. It was hard to believe that her mother wouldn’t have made dinner for her. Even in her own home and in her own kitchen, she felt like a stranger because she didn’t know where was cookies, noodles or chips, or anything instant ready-to-eat food. ‘You should buy a book name ‘How to cook?’ Destiny suggested, adding fuel to Liara’s hunger. All of a sudden, they sensed Theodore. Liara used to avoid him at this moment by taking her bowl to her room. Tonight, she had nothing.

Ava My fingers drummed against the cover of one of the books I was yet to read as I read the same sentence over and over again, my eyelids heavy from reading. My stomach growled in protest, reminding me that I hadn’t eaten anything since breakfast and I should get up soon and go eat something before it got too dark. No one brought me any food.

She staggered towards the only place that seemed like a door but it was locked from outside with what seemed like a nail. She hadn’t eaten since morning and she was starving .Her stomach was growling but there was no food for her. She was going to spend the night alone, sick and hungry as hell. Who else can come to her rescue in that God forsaken place?

Star looked at me with new interest at his protest. "That is not the type of news I want to deliver to a pack member." I softly spoke, flipping through the pages. "No, it is not. I don't envy you right now, but there is another possibility." She arched a brow at me, then set a much smaller book down in front of me. "How to trick a man to love you." The title read. "Uh, I'm not sure this is the right book, Star." She was pretty damn old, maybe she was finally becoming senile.

🎀CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY-SEVEN🎀 Zayla tossed and turned, the silky sheets feeling like a taunt against her skin. Now that the adrenaline had faded and her heart had finally slowed down, her stomach was making up for lost time. It wasn't just rumbling,it was screaming. She was starving. "I'm going to die at this rate," she groaned into her pillow. "I'll be the first person in history to die of 'over eating' on an empty stomach."

From all the traveling, l realized that l must have been left unfed for 3+ days. The little food shops were closed. My stomach was growling like a wild animal. Though shaking I kept my head held high. As minutes went, l found the hunger unbearable. Without thinking l walked to the trash can, picked up the cold and the slightly stale leftover of a hamburger then took a big bite. I was so hungry. I ate the whole hamburger caring less about the fact that it was cold and stale.

The pack had been more quiet and silent than ever in the past few weeks and that worried me. Some areas had it even worse, their camps were in panic and flight. A lot had gone down in days. A lot. “And the supply stores.” My jaw tightened. Rio hesitated, his eyes flickered, "Nearly empty. The children are starving and they are beginning to eat just anything including flies, roots, and barks.” My heart clenched. It felt like a hand had gripped my heart. Blood froze. “The storerooms?” “Empty. The supply stores are the only survivors.”

The night before we leave, the night before January the sixth, I learn two things: there are two kinds of hunger, and one can keep you up all night, staring at the ceiling and missing a place and people you are yet to leave. It is two O'Clock in the morning and disconcertingly quiet when I decide that I can't endure the trashing and turning. I take a book from the shelf that will no longer be mine by evening, purple hibiscus, with the cracks on its cover and Adichie's delighted face above its blurb, and I go to the sitting room that will not be ours by evening.

"That is always how it starts." Luna moved closer despite herself. Beyond the opening was a narrow chamber. Unlike everything else they had discovered, it contained almost nothing. A stone table stood in the center. Something rested on it. A book. Luna sighed. Darius looked at her. "Absolutely not." "It's a book."
