I finished, breath catching. He nodded. “A doorway we’ve been fighting to contain ever since.” Lightning sparked faintly at my fingertips, unbidden. Not from anger. Just… nerves. Destiny. The weight of it all. Alaric reached out, fingers brushing mine with calm steadiness. “You don’t have to read it now,” he said gently. “But I thought you should know. If we’re going to keep this kingdom safe… it’s part of your story now.” I looked down at the spell book. The silver clasp glimmered in the low light.

Her smile, laced with blood, looked haunting. A Haunt swept in, scattering the cash and gold bars from the car. Sparks flew, and the flames roared to life with a loud whoosh. I pulled a gold bar from my pocket. "Hear me, infant spirits, it's time for our final showdown!" The winds howled as I watched my mom wail in despair. Her tears were for her wealth, not a shred of worry for me. I spun around and plunged into the swirling darkness without a second thought.

The ancient flames, dormant for centuries, whispered a single word in the silence: “Oathbreaker.” Outside, the storm had begun. The mountains glowed faintly red where lightning struck, and the air pulsed with unnatural energy. The Shadow’s power was rising again, reaching for them. Lyra looked down at the book in her hands, the key to her bloodline’s prison and whispered to the wind: “Let this end with me.” Kael mounted beside her, sword drawn, eyes fixed on the storm ahead. “Then let’s go break a god.” And together, they rode into the darkness, toward the Veil, where oaths were born, and kingdoms died.

“The rogues attacked, and they hit us hard. Half of the town is destroyed, and several of our males died. I found their bodies when I ran a loop last night, but I didn’t come across anyone who was living. Nic hasn’t responded since he first alerted me of the ambush, and I can’t find him either.” Holy shit. I’d known the East had come under fire, both figuratively and literally, but I had no idea about the extent of the devastation. I spent the next several hours huddled by the hearth, the ancient book spread across my lap. The pages were brittle, written in a language that seemed to shift and change as the silver light in my blood reacted to the ink. As the sun began to peek over the jagged edges of the Black Ridge, a low, haunting horn blast echoed through the room.

I looked back at the pages of the book, wrapping myself more closely in the gray scarf Oliver had given me for Christmas. However, I was not allowed to return to the land depicted in the story from my book, because I sensed a strangely familiar aura that was getting closer and closer to our property. My first thought was mother, because the structure of the aura was very similar, but a few details did not match. I put the book on the table and lifted the blanket from my lap, setting it aside, before giving Oliver a meaningful look. He must have sensed the aura as well, as was already taking Alex in his arms and then walking towards the gazebo, where Oliver sat him down on the bench next to m
