Aspen huffed out a laugh. “Of course, he said that. Axl’s had a rough life. His mom left him with his grandmother when he was nine, then she just disappeared. He had to grow up way faster than any of us had to. When Peyton came along, he didn’t even think about it. He just stepped up and took her in. He’s a survivor.” And survivors, Aspen knew, were often the hardest people to reach.
“He thinks I’m a spoiled brat,” Merit said softly.
