They lay there, gasping, as the train picked up speed, carrying them away from the dogs, away from Lysander, away from the life they knew.
"We made it," Elion whispered.
Cale looked at the ceiling of the boxcar.
"We are in transit," Cale corrected.
"We're together."
Cale looked at Elion. He tapped his palm three times.
Safe. Safe. Safe.
It was a lie. But it was the best lie they had.
And as the train rattled north, Elion held onto the Stranger, hoping that somewhere down the line, he would find his husband again.
