"What?" she whispered, taking the tablet with trembling hands.

Aaron, the storm knocked out phone service in this area. I think some of it’s back up now, but the power isn’t. My battery’s low. Sorry, I’m only able to update you now. He read the message twice. It was concise. Informative. No heart emoji. No “I miss you.” No mention of exactly where she was staying.
