Aria shivered, but not from the cold. Xander dipped his index finger into the vial, coming away with a generous measure of the glowing, silver paste. His hand trembled slightly—a detail that moved Aria more profoundly than any grand declaration could have. The Alpha of Moonrise, a man who had faced down rogue armies without blinking, was trembling at the prospect of touching her. "The first rune," Xander whispered, his voice thick with emotion as he brought his coated finger to her collarbone, just above her heart. "Is Anam. The soul."

The insignia in the middle, a crescent moon encircled by elaborate runes, was identifiable despite the faded edges. "It was buried close to the cache," Marcus murmured quietly. "The scent is evident even though I didn't touch it with my bare hands." I cautiously took it up, feeling the silver's reaction to my flesh with tingling fingertips. The runes pulsed with an unearthly vitality, glowing dimly. "Magic," I whispered. "And not the type that we want around this pack." Marcus paused, then resumed his speech. "Alpha, there's more. One of us is the owner of the smell.
