"Helbert! Helbert!" Little feet in flip-flops sprinted across the sand towards a young guy with long hair standing barefoot on the beach. The kid’s face lit up with joy, like seeing Helbert on the shore was the best thing that happened to him today, giving him two precious moments at once.

The next morning, Heather woke to the sound of activity in the kitchen. Mitchell was back, bustling around with enthusiasm. As Heather stepped out of the bedroom, Mitchell glanced up and greeted her with a bright smile, his eyes crinkling with warmth. "Come try the banana oat cookies I just learned to make. They say it's great for soothing cramps during your period." Heather froze momentarily, her gaze lingering on the scene before her. Then, she slowly made her way to the dining table and sat down. Her eyes searched Mitchell's face, probing for answers.

Need to get what I can from her so I can pass this goddamn test and keep my father from destroying my life. I grab my chemistry textbook, my laptop with all the PDFs the teacher sent, and my notebook that has approximately three pages of terrible notes from the past month. Then I wait. Summer said she needed to freshen up first. So I sit on my bed, scrolling through I*******m to kill time. Notifications flood my screen. Comments on my latest post from the game yesterday. *You're so hot 🔥* *Marry me Crew* *Best player at Blackwood 😍*

Yet somehow… my mind still drifted toward a stubborn eighteen-year-old girl with pink bandages and reckless eyes. Ava. Even after three days away from her, she still found a way into my thoughts like she belonged there. And that was the real problem. I exhaled sharply and grabbed the whiskey bottle from the table, pouring another glass. Outside, Pasadena glittered beneath the night sky. Beautiful. But inside the hotel suite, I already knew the truth. This summer was becoming dangerous in ways I never expected.

Summer Love. I didn't think the summer part mattered. Sure we did fall in love during the summer. That doesn't mean I didn't expect it to last past that. It didn't matter to me that he was Nathan Kalis's school-bad boy. To me, he was just Nathan. The man couldn't go more than ten minutes before demanding a kiss. Who always wanted me to cuddle into him. And who loved listening to me read my books out loud.

Penelope, as I read on her badge, said. She had pretty hazel eyes, and I could swear her natural hair was brunette. Her teeth seemed artificial, too, and from her statement, I could tell she had difficulty pronouncing some words. Summer waved the book she had snatched from me and said. "She's not anything like us and will never be. She belongs to the trash." I scowled and yanked the book out of her hand. "I'll be waiting for you in the car if you'll excuse me," I gave her a tight-lipped smile and walked away.

She shows me a piece of yellow bikini that's extremely eye-catching. "I'm sure you're going to rock in it," I answer with a smile. "Miami chicks, better watch out for your men," she screams her usual lines, forcing a smile out of me, before breaking into a heavy sigh. "Even if I can't have Liam, this has been the best summer ever." Can we not talk about Liam?

CHAPTER 15 Louela Jane I moved from pot to pot, careful not to overwater—Mama always reminded me that too much water could be just as bad as too little. Every now and then, I’d gently pluck away a few dried leaves, letting the plants breathe a little easier. The rhythm of watering, the warm afternoon air, and the quiet rustling of the trees made the moment feel almost meditative. It was one of those little pockets of calm that made summer days feel endless.

She reached for it surprised by his bold act. He kept it away from her and studied the cover. “This has to be boring.” “It is.” She rolled her eyes. “Give me my book back.” “If it’s boring and you know this, then why are you reading it?” He handed it back to her. “Because the University of Miami law school suggested these books for their first year students.” She shrugged. “I like to be prepared before a semester starts.” “It’s summertime. “I’m aware of that.” “You need to be saved.”

"O-Of course. We're friends." Satisfied with my response, Bethany finally let go of my arm and followed me inside. I opened the door, but the office was pitch-black. "Dad, these are the friends I mentioned, the ones coming to work here for the summer," I said cautiously. Before I could introduce them, they pushed past me and crowded into the room. "Hello, Mr. Parker. We're here for the summer jobs. May I know what the pay is like? Is ten thousand dollars a month okay? Oh, and I'm not really into factory work. Can I get an office job instead?"
