A panting Lauren ran up to me and pulled me out of the line. She tore the papers right in front of me. "I never signed the papers! They don't count!" I stared at the snowing paper and sighed. This was a headache. "No littering. It's a public spot." She frowned. She could not believe I was talking about something so trivial, but she kicked the torn papers away and tried to pull me along. "I do not recognize these papers. We're getting remarried." I staggered but found my bearings quickly. "You signed the papers. I told you to read them closely, but you refused. That is not my fault."

I rushed toward the machine and tried to stop it, only to realize the controls were locked with a password. Panicked, I called Suzanna. She responded with impatience. “I was only scaring you. The grinder is a prop. It will stop on its own in a minute. Shane, stop overreacting and come back to cook. Eric loves your cooking.” Before I could reply, she hung up. A second later, the rope snapped. My mother screamed as she fell. I lunged forward, trying to shield her with my own body. I was too late. My mother died right before my eyes. A broken scream tore from my throat.

I screamed. I turned to face him and he smiled. “You don’t need anyone to lower the bar for you.” “I DON’T NEED ANYONE TO LOWER THE BAR FOR ME.” “You’re strong and phenomenal.” “I’M SO STRONG AND PHENOMENAL.” “You don’t need fixing. You’re a super woman.” “I DON’T NEED FIXING. I’M A SUPERWOMAN. ANDRO’S IRON LADY.” He burst into laughter. “Yeah, Iron lady in a good way.”

He simply smiled with a look of relief. The apple rolled to the ground, picking up dirt. From the start, Zach had been provoking Jessica on purpose. I looked at the blood spreading on the ground and at Zach's collapsed body, then at the frail and blind Jessica. I understood it all. This was Zach seeking redemption using Jessica. At the very end, Zach seemed to see me. His eyes were pleading. "Annie, now that I did this, will this make you feel any better?" As my own body faded, I realized this might be the last thing I would ever say. I looked right at him and gave a cold, cruel smile.
