The horror lunged, vast and ancient and utterly certain of its victory, and Luna met it head-on, silver light exploding outward from her entire body in a concentrated, focused blast that caught the ancient creature directly in its gaping, hundred-year-hungry jaws. For one blinding, endless moment, the whole battlefield seemed to hold its breath as fire and ancient darkness collided in violent, overwhelming, absolute force, the sound of it like the sky itself splitting open, like the earth remembering some older, more fundamental violence than anything mere wolves could inflict upon one another.
