Erin spat blood. Bridgette laughed, a cruel, venomous sound. Without hesitation, she answered, “Yes, I killed them. The same day I killed you. But you came back. You survived. This time, you won’t.” She lunged again, her hands around Erin’s throat, her palms striking her face until Erin’s forehead split open again. Erin whimpered, drowning in pain. Months ago, she had begun to heal, to rebuild her life. And now, these two dragged her back from the edge of death.

I lost it, my tears choking off the rest of my words as I fell to my knees. It was the first time I’d allowed myself to feel anything other than numb about it. My sister knelt beside me and I could feel her aching to touch me. "And everyone else?" I shook my head. Saying it out loud made it so heart crushingly real. "Stan was taken at the motel... Burney killed him and we ran... Mike had HG shrapnel in him. A patrol car pulled us over and... He killed them... We were almost there... Burney saved me... He screamed at me... To run... And he... saved me..."

I’d found that if I referred to it as a mishap, and nothing more, then I could deal with it. As a team, we’d managed to avoid any civilian deaths in almost a decade. Though Tim’s death was ultimately my fault, as the newest member of the team Sierra was the one suffering through the hard stares and judgemental frowns. Whilst they would never admit it, there was a clear sense of disconnect between most of the hunters and the modern world. They were traditionalists, through and through, and Sierra – unlike the rest of us – had not either been born into the trade, as I had, or found out about the supernatural though tragedy, like Torre.

Uncle Akela handed me my mother’s necklace, “Erin, keep running. Don’t ever come back.” Since then, I have become an orphan. My eyes watered from that forgotten memory. The pain still haunts me. That was the reason why I became a cold-blooded killer. I built a wall around me. High and unbreakable. I filled my heart with rage and taught myself to be as hard as a stone. “Erin, what’s wrong?” Axel saw my teary eyes. “Nothing. I just remembered something,” I quickly wiped my tears. “Are you sure? You know you can always talk to me. We’re family. Remember that.”

Harriet was already tired, and she was about to lose consciousness. "That thing burning inside Karen is controlling her." I can see she is trying to stop herself, but she can't. "There is only one person who can help her." A new voice rose in the crowd. Everyone turned their heads to look at the person, but they were all shocked when they saw no one. Only a bright light blinded their eyes. Only Patrilia and Kelvin recognise the voice. It was Karen's guardian angel. After meeting her in the mountains, they never got to see her again. "Who will help her guardian?" Kelvin asked, walking closer to the light.

He said to himself, slowly, “This book... is said to contain the eternity. No living on... can ever replace its essence...” “So foolish,” I commented abruptly, and the curves in his lips only widened. “That's! How can he smile while holding the book? Is it really contain the eternity?!” Alarkin... is just a foolish. So how can he be the very figure of that night? The next moment I wake up, the news of losing the class already reach the institution. “I'm dead?!” I almost couldn't believe how this world really revolve. “It's been a month,” the veil-woman inform, “so authority of this place thought you, together with your group, is dead!”

The pack scattered, howls turning to yelps as the bullets rained down. Werewolf hunters. My stomach twisted as I dragged myself across the ground, searching for cover. “Silas!” I yelled again, panic rising in my throat. He turned, his blue eyes locking on mine, and started toward me just as another wolf appeared. Ronan. I barely registered his presence before he was struck down, his body hitting the ground hard. Everything happened too fast—snarls, gunshots, screams. And then the bullets hit. Silas leapt in front of me, his body blocking mine just as the silver shots tore through the air. The impact sent us both flying back, and I hit the ground hard, the wind knocked from my lungs.

Silence lingered between them. The rest of the flight was quiet as Kevin sat in another seat at the back busy signing documents and discussing business matters while Emma read a book and intermittently looked out the window watching the scenery below and sometimes stealing a glance back at him and caught him looking at her. After an hour, Kevin walked to her, checking on her as she drifted off to sleep. The leather-bound book she was reading lay open on her lap, the words written on its open page clearly visible; “If I know what love is, it is because of you!" Kevin smiled and then put the book aside. There was no lie in it.

I walked toward the trash can, my steps unsteady. Out of habit, I checked to see if my roommates had thrown away any leftover or expired food I could salvage. I had spent most of the semester surviving this way. Just as I started digging through the trash, someone pushed the door open. "Ugh, Elena, why are you going through the garbage again? That's disgusting." My roommate Danielle Lynch's voice made my face burn with shame. I jerked my hand back from the trash can like it had burned me. She glanced at the scratch card on my desk and immediately understood. Undisguised contempt filled her eyes.

More than anything, she was concerned about her friend. **** This book is sequel to the first book Innocence. You have to read the first book to know the story clearly.
