Before I could react, George gestured, and several eerie puppets stepped forward to pin me down and drain my blood. A sharp bell rang out, echoing through the night.

But this is what I will say. All of this is based on true events. This happened in one of the provinces of the country that was deemed a nest of aswang (local version of vampires), engkanto (benevolent fay), maligno (malevolent earth beings) and other supernatural/paranormal creatures. It just so happens that its close proximity to another province that was also known for such monsters has added to its creepy reputation. This story happened around the 1970s, and my mother was just a child then.

The next second, the Patchwork Monster tore the man in half. He tossed the body outside casually. Just then, a crisp, bell-like voice sounded outside. “It’s after work hours, who’s so rude as to be throwing bodies around?” A young girl with three heads and eight arms appeared at the doorway. With just one look at the shop, anger filled her voice, and her hair stood on end. “Who the hell had a death wish and smashed the Number One Must-Eat shop in the entire horror game?”

I leaned on the desk and looked around the building absentmindedly until my eyes finally settled on a small sign hanging on a table covered with a neat stack of books. “Warning: The Library is Not Responsible for Nightmares!” I read out loud, walking over to look at the books. Well-worn volumes with pink skulls grinning back at me from stickers on their spines. Dracula. Frankenstein. The Invisible Man.

“No doubt.” “What about those two small FedEx boxes?” “Most recent novels from Samhain Horror.” “Awesome. Those books I bought at the Webb County Library sale last week?” “Sorted into general and mystery fiction. Struck the mother lode with all those Mary Higgins Clark novels.” “We cater to all tastes, miss. Unless you like Twilight, 50 Shades of Gray or James Patterson. Folks want drivel, they can drive to Utica.” “Hey. I actually liked Twilight. It wasn’t all bad.”

There was a table. Books stacked on it. Not like the ones I used to see at home. These looked older. Some of them had markings on the covers I didn’t understand. I walked closer. My fingers hovered over one of them before I touched it. The cover felt rough. Worn. I opened it slowly. The pages were filled with symbols. Not letters. Not words I knew. Shapes. Lines. Things that looked like drawings but weren’t. I frowned. “What is this…?” I flipped a page.

The lanterns flickered and died, leaving only the pale, sickly moonlight filtering through the window where I stood. I watched in horror as the thing on the floor didn't stand up like a human. It buckled. Its spine snapped and reshaped, its limbs elongating with the sound of dry wood splintering. "Silas!" I screamed. My grandfather stood his ground. He reached into his satchel and threw a handful of salt, but the creature didn't recoil. It inhaled. The salt hung in the air for a second before being sucked into the thing’s lipless mouth.
