Damon in this state was a much more beautiful sight than any other I’d ever come across, it brought a small smile to my face and I continued to watch him. “So take a breath, love.” He turned to me. The sudden look swept me off my feet, his intense gaze sending shivers through me. My eyes shut and I took in a breath, inhaling the saltiness of the air. “On the days you feel stifled, when you feel empty and you have no idea what to do, when it feels like the world is moving too fast for you to catch up, take a breath.” His voice came out as a hum that soothed my ears, filling me with so much calmness as it made its way through my ear, and into every part of me.

I adjusted my chair and sat up straight, attempting to compose myself. As I stared at Leonard, my imagination took over for a moment. He looked like he had just stepped out of an oven—hot and fresh. I could almost pounce on him. A smile crept onto his face as his eyes stayed locked on mine, and I felt my heart flutter. We hadn’t spoken a word since he entered, but the tension between us was undeniable. I found my breaths shallow and labored—it was like I couldn’t breathe. That was when I finally understood the concept of, “you take my breath away.”

His gaze is steady. "Just breathe," he whispers. "I'm breathing. I'm fine. I'm okay. I'm fine. I'm completely fine. I'm totally fine. I'm perfectly fine." "You're not. You're holding your breath. You're gripping my arm like I'm going to disappear. You're white as a sheet. You're shaking. You're about to pass out. You're about to run." I exhale. Slowly. Deliberately. I force my shoulders to drop. I force my jaw to unclench. I force my hands to relax. I force my heart to slow.

The song changed and it nearly made me cry because it was so sweet, so soft with the violin played with such skill. It was like a siren’s call and I was ready to surrender. I turned to stare at mom and she smiled. “Breathe baby.” She said, doing the breathing exercise with me, both of us staring through glass eyes. Her tears fell and mine followed.

I will not be fine. “Shh. You’ve just got to breathe.” “But I can’t.” I only now realize that my breath’s caught in my throat. And I cannot seem to let it pass. I’m not in control of it. “Breathe, Heidi.” “I― I…” I can’t breathe! “I am commanding you.” I feel a sudden warmth inside me. It’s as if someone blew air into my lungs to release my breath, which elicits a satisfying sensation. The panging in my head doesn’t disappear, but it’s bearable. Maybe it’s because the noises outside have become tiny echoes to my hearing, or because Zavere is smiling at me, while I’m staring into his dark eyes; watching the light glisten in them.

“ I was … I was … I can't breathe, “ a crooked smile slipped on my lips. She couldn't breathe, but she had wrapped her legs around my waist, urging me on. Her eyes brimmed of tears which were out of pleasure, my hands ran through her hair as I placed my forehead on hers, “ Breathe Ray, take in air, for I will be damned if I let another man take you from me”

Love can hit you when you least expect it. It could be a soft easy wind that caresses you and gets stronger over time till it absorbs into your body and heart. Other times it can hit you like a gale-force wind and take every breath you will ever have, and breathe life into the person who took it in the first place. Laken stole my breath. She was my gale-force wind, and I will gladly give her every breath I have just to keep her safe, alive, and mine. If I have to live without her then I don’t want my breath. I don’t want anything but her. I will go to hell and back to get her from the grips of death.
