Despite his mother's disapproval of him wandering alone, especially at night, Talon found solace in the night's beauty, revealing the world's splendor and the forest's wonders when all creatures, save for the nightcrawlers, slumbered. Growing weary, Talon realized he should return to the cave before his absence troubled his mother. She fretted excessively, a trait that puzzled him. Anxious for the day when he could protect his mother, alleviating her fears, Talon rose to his feet. Dusting sand off his shorts with a smile, he traced a path around the rocks once more, his hand lightly grazing each one as he passed.

"I couldn’t get it up because of the pain." But it only made Alaric laugh harder. Talon was a late bloomer so when everyone his age could already transform into Phoenixes back then, he was just learning how to bring out and control his fire. He could remember how Talon had to soak his butt in freezing water for months before it returned to normal. More embarrassed than pissed, Talon seized Alaric by the neck and pinned him against the wall, pressing his lower body firmly against Alaric’s hip. "Want to see if I can get it up right now?" he asked, his voice low, deep, and teasing.

But Talon committed a heinous crime years ago, one that ingnited the unbridled rage of Alpha Xerxes. Talon attacked a human city and slaughtered every single innocent soul, both old and young. This was something Alpha Xerxes couldn't forgive. He ordered his lycan army to murder Talon's wife and son as punishment, and then banished Talon to the ends of the realm, a barren land where there was no sign of life, where Talon would wallow in misery for the rest of his immortal life.

My palms press into the carpet, clawing for stability, wishing for this to be a dream. The cemetery blurs. My father's hand hovers near my shoulder, trembling as much as mine, but I shake him off. If he touches me, I'll break. If anyone touches me, I'll shatter into dust and blow away. So I stay cemented in place, heaving and choking on my tears, until everything around me falls hushed. And the shock on everyone's face falls away into darkness. The darkness that welcomes me. The darkness that is now my home.
