[Faye] I know it might sound strange, I still am and have always been a little afraid of the dark. Actually no, that’s not quite accurate. Terrified would be the appropriate word. Terrified of the dark. I know all little kids fear the dark a little bit at some point, but the terror I feel go beyond the regular childhood fears of monsters under the bed or in the closet. I don’t fear being in the dark. I have an honest fear of the darkness itself. When I stare out into a complete deep shadow, it doesn’t feel empty, it feels overwhelmingly full.

He steps back twice, and his hand comes up between us, and the look on his face is something I will keep for the rest of my life, because it isn’t anger. It’s terror. “That’s not possible,” he says. I can’t answer. My jaw is locked, my whole body humming like a struck wire, and the heat is already sinking, already going out, leaving me shaking and hollow and more frightened than he is. “It held,” Garrick says, and he isn’t talking to me. “It held for six years. "Scared? You should be, Ameera. Fear is the only thing that will keep you in line. Now get dressed! We have somewhere to be, and you will not bring shame upon this family again." Ameera's body shook with a mixture of fear and defiance. It’s really hard to resist him, but the fear of him suddenly leaving me someday is still lingering somewhere in my mind. Everything is all good and rosy now, but I still fear the day he’ll suddenly turn against me. Maybe it’s trauma that is causing this, I don’t know. “You aren’t saying anything,” he mind-links me. “What are you scared of?”

A few trackers moved ahead of us as they scoured our surroundings. I crouched near the side of the road, brushing my fingers against the gravel shoulder. There. Faint. I closed my eyes briefly. There was the lingering scent of gasoline, old rain, and exhaust—but beneath it was something darker. Something sticky and wrong. Fear. Not the general kind people carried around every day. This had been sharp. Panicked. The kind that clung to a place after someone screamed. “She was here,” I said quietly as I rose back to my feet.

Bright Since the attack, I hadn’t been able to stop looking over my shoulder every time I went out with Sophia. The fear was eating me alive. Zara screamed, more terrified than during her previous visits with Silas. "Let's see if ghosts are real," Felix declared, his fear diminishing once he had a visible target. However, as he moved to investigate, Zara held his arm tightly. She sobbed, "No! Please, let's leave! I'll tell Mr. Grayson I'm never coming back. I really can't handle this anymore." Despite her medical training and martial arts skills, she was still a young woman whose body and mind naturally reacted to such terror. "Sorry about this, but we're getting this over with tonight," Felix said firmly. Before Zara could protest, Felix scooped her up in a princess carry and bolted toward the dark figure.
