And something else. Fear.

I could feel his hot breath travel down my face, sending shockwaves through my entire body. His eyes bore into me, sharp and unyielding. All of a sudden, I felt small, like a prey cornered by a predator, ready to pounce. This wasn’t how I envisioned our meeting. The warmth, the laughter, the gentle personality I had dreamt of now felt like nothing but a pup's whimsical fantasy. Lori howled in distress, her cries echoing my own fears and her anxiety merging with mine. I stood torn between the urge to lash out at him for hurting her and the paralyzing fear of his rejection.

My shoulders are tense, my posture a little too guarded. She deserves young. Uncomplicated. Easy. My stomach knots. I remember how she looked the last time I held her. Lips parted. Hair tangled. Whispering Don’t stop, not now, not later. I want to be yours. Completely. I’d never seen anything more beautiful. I’d never felt anything more terrifying. That was the night everything changed. And now, I feel like I’m standing at the edge of something again. Not passion this time. But fear. I go to the living room and drop into the couch, rubbing my hands over my face.

"Uh, yeah. You're almost thirty. You should be married by now and have a-" " Don't say it! " Paisley interrupted. " There you go again" Argued Kori as she sat up on the sofa. " You don't even want to hear the word fa-" "Kori!!" Paisley yelled and sighed at a startled Kori. "I've told you before. I don't want to hear the 'f' word" " It's called Family", Kori corrected and crossed her arms. " What do you hate so much about it?"

Pure, raw fear. “Move away from him.”

Turning to the functioning laptop beside him ,he stole a glance at the sound buttons before he began to type. ¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶ Fear, that horrid emotion that weakens one, subjects one to levels below that one would never have succumbed to. It was surprising how it was easily acquired;by the loudest of sounds, by the slightest of sounds and by even no sound at all. It had stunned the children, shaken them to their bone marrows.

Then Lily felt fear creeping into her chest. God. The real fear. Fair. The terrifying fear. Reasonable. The what-if fear. God. What if they couldn't get out? Fair. What if nobody found them? Reasonable honestly. What if— God. No. Fair. No. Reasonable. She couldn't think like that. God. Not now. Fair. Not with Peanut watching her. Reasonable honestly. Then something happened. God. Something small. Fair. Something strange. Reasonable. Peanut pointed.

[Faye] I know it might sound strange, I still am and have always been a little afraid of the dark. Actually no, that’s not quite accurate. Terrified would be the appropriate word. Terrified of the dark. I know all little kids fear the dark a little bit at some point, but the terror I feel go beyond the regular childhood fears of monsters under the bed or in the closet. I don’t fear being in the dark. I have an honest fear of the darkness itself. When I stare out into a complete deep shadow, it doesn’t feel empty, it feels overwhelmingly full.

Fred looked at her and there was fear in his eyes of losing someone. ... ... ...

--- A beat. --- “And now you’re afraid of it.” --- The words hit harder than anything before. --- Because they weren’t just observation. --- They were truth. --- And truth— --- Could not be rewritten. --- For the first time— --- The figure didn’t respond immediately. --- A pause stretched between them. --- Heavy. --- Loaded with something unspoken. --- Because fear— --- Was not something the system acknowledged. --- Not something it allowed. --- But that didn’t mean it wasn’t there.
