Over the coming forty-eight hours I have a little trouble and quite a few arguments with Morpheus I continue a few of my usual meetings and obligations, during that time but I also plan a visit which could turn into a raid of the pack I believe Yasmine is or was held within. I sit in my office and go over the latest information on the Warrior packs, Zaire sent out a couple more scouts to all six packs, even with the insiders they don't always get the information that is required as they can't dig too deep without being found out. He shakes his head somberly, looking again at our dead human, “but if they want to talk to me or my patrols, we’re happy to help. Just let me know.” “Will do. Before you head back to your packhouse, have Tasha and Channing take you to where the scents are the strongest so you can get the smell for yourself.” I say nodding to my two top trackers. “They’d be happy to show your own trackers where the scents are too.” “That’s great, thank you, Alpha.” He turns to Tasha and Channing, “Lead the way!” As the three of them begin walking off, he looks back over his shoulder, “see you in a few hours, Alpha Scarlett. “It was obvious that the Trust would need to commission a full structural survey of the place to assess it, so in order to save time, I commissioned one. You should have had a copy. I had one faxed to the Trust’s New York office last week when I received it.” Veronica could feel her heart starting to beat just a little bit too fast as the angry color burned her face. “You… commissioned a survey?” she questioned with dangerous calmness. “May I ask who gave you that authority to do such a thing?” “J.J.,” came back the prompt and stingingly dismissive reply.

He stopped directly in front of me and spoke low enough that only I and Kieran behind me could hear. "Sovereign. Quarter mile east of the road. A cave. Our forward scout found it less than an hour ago." He paused. "There is a boy inside. He is alive but he is not — he is not right. Skin is almost transparent. Eyes leaking black fluid. Moving like something is working him from the inside."

The scout didn’t draw a weapon. Didn’t defend. He just raised both hands and said, hoarse: “I’m not here to fight.” Fenris didn’t slow. Lumi intercepted. Fast. Clean. Brutal. She twisted his wrist, disarmed him, shoved him back with just enough force to make a point without breaking anything. “Think,” she snapped. Fenris looked like he wanted to argue. Then he looked at the scout again. And stopped. Good. Progress. The man swayed.

I threw my entire weight into the scout, my jaws locking onto his neck. We hit the dirt in a tangle of fur and teeth. The scout clawed at my chest, his nails digging into the healing scars. I ignored the pain. I clamped down harder, feeling the crunch of bone, until the scout went limp. I tossed the carcass aside and turned to Marek. The ghost-wolf stood still, his silver-white fur bristling. He looked at the dead scout, then at me. He didn't growl. He just dipped his head—a gesture of acknowledgment. Not a submission, but a thank you.

The scout swallowed. “The eastern infirmary.” Rex nodded. “Is he injured?” The scout hesitated. That hesitation sent a chill through me. “Not exactly.” Nobody liked that answer. “Define not exactly,” Ash said. The scout looked uncomfortable. “Physically, he’s fine.” “Then what’s wrong with him?” The young wolf glanced toward me. And suddenly looked even more nervous. “He keeps repeating her name.” The room fell silent again. I wished that surprised me. It didn’t.

My heart soared into my throat when I identified the voice; it belonged to one of our scouts. We hurried to the border, where a tiny pack of wolves was assembled. As we got closer, the smell of blood struck me like a solid barrier. "What's going on?" I insisted, making my way through the crowd. Then I noticed it. The scout's corpse was sprawled on the ground, disfigured beyond identification. His fur was stained with blood, and deep wounds marred his chest and neck.
