I began, my voice flat, "I've never forgotten what you've done for me, your courage, your sacrifice, and the pain you went through to save me." "No amount of money or material things could ever repay you for that." My voice softened, "But that's all I can give you. I don't love you." "I can promise you safety, an easy life, but not the heart you want from me." Tears streamed down her face. "That's okay, Lucien. I can wait. I can try to make you love me. Time changes everything." She pulled the blanket back, revealing the jagged scars on her leg, a painful reminder of the night she saved me.
