I smiled and nodded, playing my part, feeling like I was dying inside. I was an actor in a play where the script was my own erasure.
As the initial buzz died down, the conversation, as it always did among Alphas, turned to business and threats.
“...heard about the rogue attacks up north?” the portly Alpha said, sipping his drink. “Nasty business. Seems coordinated. Not just random scavengers.”
Another nodded, his face grim. “My patrols caught two of them near the eastern ridge. They fought like cornered animals, didn’t even try to talk. Just snarling madness.”
