The American Roommate Experiment Novels & Stories

I cooed, "Babes, what do I do? I'm so scared." The truth was, I'd already started a live stream the moment Quinn handed me that water. Every word and move from her and Kendrick had been recorded. The room I was in was sickening. The walls were covered in compromising photos of young women who clearly looked unwilling. On top of that, there were all kinds of tools and props scattered around, along with a whole arsenal of twisted toys. By now, over 100 thousand people had crowded into the live stream, and the number was still climbing. Everyone watching was horrified.

Clutching her phone, she burst into tears and ran into the bathroom. From outside, I could vaguely hear her making a complaint call. Her voice was nothing like usual—pinched and cloying, unpleasant to listen to. Grinding her teeth, Joey dropped back into her chair. The other roommate, Carmen Radler, asked worriedly, "She isn't really dating Nick, is she? We really can't afford to offend someone like him." Joey snorted. "So what if she is? We're in the right—what's there to be afraid of? Does he really think he can bend the law? We got into this university on our own merit!"

I was drowning in bills. My landlord had given me exactly seven days to come up with the full rent for my one-bedroom apartment or I’d be sleeping on the sidewalk. I had no choice. I put out an ad for a roommate to share the tiny space. But then there was a huge problem. Every single person who applied was a man. Yes. I had to live with a man. But… with time running out, I finally picked one. His name was Elias.

“My parents always do this big, chaotic thing. Food everywhere, Christmas movies on repeat, cousins running around like feral animals, aunts arguing over board games. It’s loud. It’s messy. It’s… nice. You’d fit right in.” I stared at him. He hurried on, words tumbling faster. “I mean—not as, like—not as my boyfriend or anything. Just… as a friend. Roommate. Someone who doesn’t want to spend the holidays eating takeout alone in an empty off-campus apartment while the heat’s set to sixty to save money.” The word *boyfriend* hung between us anyway, bright and unignorable, even though we’d both been careful not to say it out loud yet. My throat tightened.

she asked. I sighed. “Because he’s an idiot who doesn’t want to admit he likes her, too, and he thinks she’ll just always be there. She gets sick of being a doormat, and begins to move on from him onto his roommate.” “Does the roommate like her?” Heather stole some of my Skittles while watching. “Shit!” she giggled when the main girl poked fun at the roommate. “That was hilarious!” “Oh, yeah. This series is Chinese, but I’ve seen some Korean shows that put this one to shame,”

His dark circles, as well as his tired body, were evidence of his sleepless nights. "Why don't you try for a paying guest?" he suggested as he picked up the cushion that had fallen from his kick. "You're forgetting that I live in a one-bedroom apartment." "I don't have an extra room." He was perplexed and raised his head. "You could tell them you're looking for a roommate." Sharing a room with a boy will have no effect on you. Because you are rarely at home. And if they refuse, you can sleep on the sofa here. By the way, where do you sleep now?

For six months I renovated the condo where my fiancé and I were supposed to begin our married life. Grant said he was buried in a project. My brother said he was always traveling. My best friend said something had come up at home. Not one of them had time to lend a hand. The night before I moved in, they covered my eyes and told me someone I would never guess had come back to warm the place for me. The door opened, and there was Serena Cole, a childhood friend I hadn’t seen in years, wearing my slippers and rushing at me with a smile. “Surprised?” I was. Until she said, offhand, “These past few days I couldn’t have managed without Grant helping me pick a mattress, Owen carrying my bags,

When I started college, I wanted a normal college experience, so I refused to use the black card my parents gave me. My roommate, Peggy Slade, was on need-based financial aid. Every day, she did two things. First, she'd sweet-talk her rich, hot online boyfriend and brag about him. Second, she'd make fun of me, the small-town nobody who couldn't even recognize designer brands. All my clothes back home were custom-made, so I honestly didn't know a single logo. I never bothered explaining. Her online romance was more entertaining than reality TV. Then one day, a screenshot of a money transfer popped up on her phone, and I caught a glimpse. 'Wait. She's using my photos for online dating?'

Tatiana was alarmed to see me. Tahlia had not assigned me any tasks, so I switched to polite mode. “Hello, Tatiana,” I said sweetly with a little curtsy. I could see her face slowly twist, and she seemed angry. “Fake! You’re so fake! Urgh!” “Tatiana, what are you talking about?” An elderly lady with a cane appeared from behind her. She squinted at me and pulled out her reading glasses. “And who is this?” “Grandma, this is my friend, Yvonne Zane. I switched dorms, and she’s my new roommate.”
