She’d continue in the afternoon. The noon conversations ran long. Not because either of them made them run long. The room was under construction and they couldn’t talk inside it during the work, so they talked at the kitchen table, and the kitchen table had a quality of no-agenda that the more formal space didn’t. “The shelves,” he said, on the third day. “The way you’ve arranged them.” “By category first,” she said. “Then by frequency of use within the category.” “The books I use for work are at the front,” he said. “The personal ones are further back.”

The only form of light in the dark room coming from the half-drawn curtain. He switched on the warm light by his desk, only to notice some things that were out of place. A faint shift in the carpet, the drawer not fully closed and the slightest trace of perfume that didn’t belong to him. Heira had managed to sneak out through the balcony just before the doors were opened.

"At least I would know exactly what I injured myself looking at." I scoffed and faced forward. But I couldn't help but notice my cheeks been warm. I told myself it's the evening air but I knew it wasn't. I stopped when the garden came into view. There was a table at the centre covered in a deep cloth, two chairs dressed in matching fabric facing each other. Flowers had been arranged along the edges, real ones, their colours soft in the fading light. The whole thing was careful and beautiful and nothing at all like what I had been expecting.

The boy had commandeered what appeared to be an entire shelf’s worth of books, arranged in an elaborate configuration around him that I couldn’t immediately identify as structure but he was clearly very invested in it. He was talking while he built, a continuous, confident narration of his own process that required no encouragement and no audience response, just a voice that had apparently decided the room needed filling and had taken on the responsibility enthusiastically. She looked a little mad and I knew it was also because I didn't do anything and pretended not to notice so she had kept on working, and just as I had thought, she didn't return the hotel room back to it's initial state, although Reece and Kaden were too absentminded to notice. The books which I had loved had been arranged in a delicate and beautiful manner and whoever had arranged it had put much thought into it but Yrene on the other hand had just put the books where she felt they fit best, and it looked rough by the time she was done.
