Madine stabbed at her pancakes, she had no appetite. She watched Pearl chatter away, answering every question Eric threw at he, favourite toy, favourite bedtime story, even what she wanted to be when she grew up. (“A princess doctor,” Pearl declared solemnly. “Because princesses get to wear crowns, but doctors help people.”)
Eric really listened, his attention never straying. Every laugh he gave seemed genuine, every expression softened at Pearl’s words.
And Madine’s heart ached.
