He hugged her back as she sniffled and snotted all over his suit.

All of this Just Never Ends. She breathed slowly and put the frame back on the shelf, her hands briefly resting on it. She missed her friend, not the LEAD ENGINEER, not Grant Harrison's fiancée, but Maddy. The girl with whom she could devour an entire container of cookie dough ice cream while they both stayed up all night studying for finals. The one with the loud, free laugh. Jenna got up and walked back to the couch to retrieve her phone back. The last thing her thumb had gone over was Maddison’s name.

The words sat on the screen under the soft living room light while the ocean moved outside the open windows. She gave me a small tired smile that looked practiced and waited. I read it twice. The waitress bought us two menus and Max ordered us two coffees. I was looking at the menu and he was looking at me. I turned more red if that was possible. Jenna watches her go, makes a note on the small pad she is carrying, and then looks up. And sees me. I am good at reading faces. It is one of the skills I am most proud of, the ability to read the micro-expressions that people cannot control — the flinch, the flare, the involuntary tell. I watch her face in the half-second before she can compose it and I look for the thing I came here to find. Fear. Discomfort. The old wound opening. What I find instead is recognition. Clean and settled, the way you recognize something from a long time ago that no longer has any power over you. And then, moving in underneath it so quickly I almost miss it — something that looks, impossibly, like pity.
