I was way too excited. My hands were trembling. With my other hand, I hurried to undo my pants. I could feel that Ms. Johnston's body had already gone weak. Her raised hips began to sway more violently. Suddenly, the sound of a shelf toppling over came from outside. "What, you think you're the only one who can buy something? The shop's open for business, and I'm a customer too." "I said no, so no. Jenna is mine. All of you can get lost!"

"Martha, take her back. No food for three days. Let us see if hunger improves her manners." Back in the cell, I collapsed on the cot. Three days without food. I was already weak. Three days might break me completely. But I refused to break. Not for Viper. Not for anyone. That night—or what I thought was night—I heard crying from the cell next door. Soft. Desperate. I pressed my ear against the wall. "Hello?" The crying stopped. "My name is Jenna," I whispered. "Can you hear me?" Silence. Then a voice, young and scared. "I am Sofia."

She wasn't one to believe in fairy tales and couldn't dream of him as her Prince charming. When she went back to the bedroom, Casper was on a call so she went ahead to start eating when her phone rang. She went to pick it up, sliding her thumb over the screen. “Where did you go this time?” Peggy’s worried voice rang through the line before Jenna had the chance to say hello. “In Casper’s house. I said it in the note.” Jenna went back to sit and eat while she spoke. It wasn't good etiquette but she had to save time.

she joked. "Everyone can read the dumb little tabloids," Jenna said with a wave of her hand. Then, she placed her hand on her hip, resting it there as she looked pointedly at Amelia. "I want to hear it from you. You’re going to be the star of the show, dearie. We don’t read the stories from the eyes of the side characters." Her words caused Amelia’s smile to grow a little more genuine. The warmth of Matteo’s hand on the small of her back boosted her confidence greatly as well, and confidence blossomed in Amelia’s chest.

Why did she care if Jenna sat with Kai? Trying not to make eye contact with anyone, she stared down at her work. "You're some kinda bookworm, huh?" Kai asked, noticing the book in her hand. "I... like books, yeah. I already read this one at my old school, so it is pretty easy," she told him. It was a lie—she'd read The Great Gadsby for pleasure way before that. "Great, you can do my homework for me," Kai declared with glee. "Yay," Jenna said sarcastically, but quickly looked up at him and smiled to show she was kidding.

The handwriting was jagged, ink pressed so hard it almost tore the page. Her throat tightened as she read. You’re not supposed to be alive, Aria. The words blurred as her fingers shook. For a second, the cafeteria noise, the girls’ chatter, even Iris’s voice faded. Someone knew. Someone was watching. Her hand clenched the note so hard it crumpled. Lexa’s growl was feral. Let them come. Let them try again. But Jenna only smirked, slipping the paper into her blazer pocket. “Perfect,” she whispered. “Let the games begin.”

Just like she was changing me for the better already. My heart raced as my wolf’s eyes scanned the room for her. I had been looking forward to this moment ever since she had stepped foot out of here last week after school. A smile on her lips and a blush on her cheeks. And then, I saw her. Jenna was perched on a ladder, her vibrant blonde hair catching the light from the windows. She wore a faded band t-shirt and a pair of worn jeans, making her look effortlessly cool even in this dusky old space. My heart skipped a beat as I watched her reach for a book on a high shelf, her fingers grazing the spine gently before she turned her head, looking over her shoulder as her eyes met mine.

And again. Ignored. Her pride, once untouchable, now lay in tatters. Back at the Anderson Empire, Jenna lounged on her office couch, snacking on macarons with Stella beside her. They still giggled about what had just transpired when Jenna's tablet lit up with a video call. "Alexa!" she greeted excitedly. Alexa appeared in a flurry of hairpins and fabric swatches on the screen. "Ladies! You won't believe how chaotic it is here. And you went shopping? Without me?!"

The book clattered to the floor, scattering colorful pages across the carpet. "Daddy!" Chloe exclaimed, a wide smile spreading across her face. "Hey, princess," I said, forcing a smile. My gaze flicked to Jenna, who stood there looking flustered, a strand of hair clinging to her brightly painted lips. "Eddie," she said, her voice strained. "You're back." "That's clear," I replied, my tone clipped. "What's going on here?" "I was just reading Chloe a story," Jenna stammered, picking up the book and dusting it off.

ROBERT. “Tell me what it’s like living out here alone after everything.” Jenna set the coffee mug in front of me on the terrace table and let her fingers slide along the inside of my wrist longer than any daughter-in-law should. The morning sun warmed the white stone. She wore a low-neck strapless dress that barely contained her breasts and thin cotton shorts that clung to her hips. Her bare knee brushed mine when she sat. She left it there. I looked at the place where our skin touched and then at the ocean so I would not look at her mouth. “Quiet. Most days I run the coastal path until my head clears. Repair the boat. Read. The divorce took the noise out of the house. I never put it back.”
