Cheyenne lifted her head again, caught between exasperation and reluctant amusement. “You two are impossible.”
“Good thing you’re the one handling impossible shit,” Ben shot back with a wink.
Despite herself, she laughed—short and sharp, but real. The sound eased some of the weight pressing against her ribs, though the truth of their theory still sat heavy in her chest. If they were right, then the monsters weren’t just shadows in the woods. They were hunters. And she, and the other guardians, were the prey.
