I tried to listen, but my mind kept drifting—to Ethan, to Mia, to the bonfire, to the lake, to all the moments that had led me here.
Then they started calling names.
“Ava Monroe.”
I walked across the stage, shook hands with the principal, and accepted my diploma with a smile that was only half-fake. My parents were in the audience, crying. My mom held up a sign that said “We’re so proud of you” in glittery letters. My dad was pretending he wasn’t emotional, but I saw him wipe his eyes when he thought no one was looking.
