It wasn’t a mana stone. It was a blood stone. The realization sent an uncomfortable chill through him. Unlike natural mana stones, blood stones weren’t gifts of nature. They were created. Forged through one of the cruelest rituals ever recorded. Carlisle had read about them years ago while studying the forgotten history of the continent. The process still disgusted him whenever he remembered it. Creating a single blood stone required hundreds of sacrifices. Dark mages and witches gathered living victims inside an enormous ritual circle before beginning a ceremony that lasted seven days and seven nights.

Through the crowd, I saw Richard lurking in the building’s shadow. No surprise there. He never could support the household with his wages before; I’d been paying for everything, giving them a good life. Of course, he wouldn’t let a cash cow like me go. He then waved his hand and the bloodstone disappeared miraculously. Wilbur looked around the basement and saw that there was nothing else.
