Everywhere I looked, I saw damage. Missing pieces. Broken bodies. Scars that told stories of violence and survival in equal measure. Some limped. Others moved with the careful deliberation of people managing constant pain. A few had the clouded eyes of partial blindness. One woman's arm hung useless at her side, the bones having healed wrong and never been reset. These were the Broken Wolves. The castoffs. The ones deemed too damaged to keep. The ones thrown away. My throat tightened with something that might have been recognition. Kinship, maybe. I'd been thrown away too. Cast aside as worthless because I couldn't shift, couldn't breed, couldn't be what Julian needed me to be.

Then I saw it. A page halfway through the book, dog-eared and circled in red ink. The title above the spell read: For the Broken Wolf. I sat up straighter. The ink was old but bold, and next to the spell, someone had written in tiny script, “Use only when the soul still listens.” My chest tightened. My wolf had been silent for a few weeks. I’d thought maybe she was gone completely. But tonight, something… stirred. It wasn’t a growl or a snap or even a word. Just a breath. Like someone exhaling from a long sleep.

"How long do most wolves last?" "Depends. Tough wolves, ones who've survived the streets, they might make it three or four months. Pack wolves like you? Two months tops before you break." The older wolf shakes his head. "And breaking's worse than dying. Broken wolves come out thralls. Vampire slaves. Lost everything that made them wolves." I think about Marcus. I start to freak out a little bit. Dean puts his hands on my shoulders and bends down to my level. “You are not broken; I never want to hear you call yourself that again. We’ll see what we can find out. Okay?” He says looking into my eyes. I lean back into Issac, “But what if what happened is my wolf simply didn’t want me?” I say, trying to hold back my tears. Why doesn’t my wolf want me. Am I really so broken?

Before anyone can react it kneels beside the wolf, the threads around its hands flare softly. The malformed wolf goes still instantly. The clearing falls silent. The creature lowers its head slightly. Listening. Then its silver eyes close. The threads around the creature pulse once, softly. And then the screaming stops. Not because the wolf died, because the shifting stabilized. The wolf collapses unconscious into the snow. Breathing. Alive. The creature rises slowly, turning toward us. And speaks, not perfectly, but enough. “Breaking.” Its gaze lifts toward the mountain. “Boundary…. Breaking.”

Only want her. I am undone. I am falling apart. She is gone. And my wolf, my broken, desperate wolf, growls low. Full of despair. Full of need. Full of recognition I cannot name. She broke me. “I need to ask you something about my wolf.” There’s a pause before he asks, “Is she still not coming out?” A sharp pain tugs at my heart. “My wolf isn’t coming out. Is she broken?” “No,” he almost barks. “She’s not broken. She’s just weak right now. When wolves are kept down for too long, they become submissive or afraid. They don’t remember how to rise forth, but don’t worry. If you can feel her, then she’s still there, which means she can be coaxed out. Reawakened.”

I blink at Raph’s last remark, because surely I misheard him. My wolf? Broken? That’s not possible. Lycan wolves don’t just break like cheap clay pots dropped by a toddler. But the look on his face says he’s serious, and that makes me sputter like I just swallowed half the stream behind us. “What? My wolf is broken? Why would you even say that?” I demand, but my voice wavers. Which is unfortunate, because that makes me sound very close to crying again, and I have cried enough today to water an entire cursed forest.
