Each shot's recoil slammed into his shoulder socket until it ached. He decided to rest tomorrow. The day after that, he would find a new shooting range to collect more bullets. He couldn't fixate on just one range. Although this was a wilderness gun range, and it was "normal" for bullets fired into the mud to disappear, missing with all 20,000 rounds… forget it. Better not attract suspicion. The apocalypse was still more than two months away. That night, Ray returned to his rented apartment. Someone had splashed feces all over his door.

I followed those instructions, lifting the gun and focusing on the target in front of me - a makeshift bullseye close to the trees in the woods I had almost been kidnapped through. My fingers hovered over the trigger, hesitating for a moment. "Go ahead," Matteo urged softly, his voice steady. "Shoot." I took a deep breath and pulled the trigger. He fell on me, blood pumping out of his chest. The sound exploded in the quiet air, startling me as the recoil pushed my arm back. I missed the target by a mile, the bullet lodging itself into a distant patch of dirt.

Luca's Pov I was not expecting that. And neither was Ryan. He yelped in pain, raising a hand to his face while his other hand pulled the trigger in reflex. Time slowed. My movements felt sluggish, like I was moving through molasses. The bullet missed Alex's head by a hair's breath. The man must have aimed for either her neck or her head but missed because she moved during her sleep exactly when he released the bullet. But I ignore him, determined to prove him wrong. I give it another shot, and once again, the bullet completely misses. Like it's dodgeball with the target.

My dream shall be achieved. I raised my rifle and aimed. I doubted I would need to be careful not to kill a beast like that. It was ridiculously resilient. I aimed to kill it while it was distracted. A shot to the neck should put it down till it was time for the sacrifice. I aimed and fired. There was a loud bang and my powerful rifle shot out the bullet. Blood was spilled but it wasn’t from the neck of the beast. Instead, it was from an arm. How did I miss my shot?
