During my rampage of a small bookshelf on the wall next to the bed, I find classic books such as, The Catcher in the Rye, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and so on. Spotting amongst the classics a leather bound book with no title or author. I slowly open it and inside handwritten pages are revealed. May 12th 1998

I can’t remember turning it on. I bend down to pick up the book. It was his favorite, ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ by J. D. Salinger. He took it everywhere he went. The day I had to collect his things at the hospital, it was just this and an old jacket that once belonged to my dad. The book, old and worn, has scribbled handwriting inside, like it was written in a hurry before the thought was lost. I close my eyes and open it on a random page. I read the first quote I can find:

Zayden As soon as I got done showering, I hurried and dried my body and hair, put on my clothes and walk out the door. I see my little mate sitting in the chair I left her in but with a book in hand. I slowly walk over to her and lean on the back of the chair. I notice she is reading my favorite book. Catch 22 by Joseph Heller. “How do you like it so far?” I startled her apparently as she jumped as soon as I asked the question.

I can hear the blood pounding in my ears as the announcer reads out the sentence that will dictate how the rest of my life is going to go. “With the 20th pick in the draft, the New York Yankees select, Noah Baringer, Billmore College." Jane leaps to her feet, jumping up and down with excitement as she clasps my arm. She gives me a hug as I get to my feet, still a little dazed but finally sapping out of it as I make my way to the stage. If her reaction and the applause from the crowd wasn’t enough to convince me that this is real, then the announcer passing on the hat to me does. I put it on, passing by the line of relevant people I’m required to shake hands with for the photo ops.

"I hated Catcher in the Rye." Nate had his mug brought up to his lip when he chokes on the dark liquid. It is amusing, really. I can see his eyes, such a light brown behind those ray bands, go wide in disbelief. "You hated Catcher in the Rye?" Intrigued as to where this conversation could go, I quickly graze the room for Levi and when I don't see him, I sit down on the other side of Nate in his booth. "Holden is the most annoying character I have ever had to read about." This isn't entirely true but I want to get a reaction out of this kid.

I turn the phone back off and return it to the desk. Finally, I turn back to the bookshelf. I pick up a book I found titled The Catcher in the Rye . I recognized the title as a classic piece of American literature, but I've never read it myself. His copy looks distinctly different from the rest of his books. The others look either new or almost new, but this one looks as though it has been read several times. I settle on the couch, open the book, and begin to read. ~~~ I freeze when I hear thumping outside on the porch. The doorknob rattles. I stare at the door in terror. A loud knock sounds. It's probably Ryan. It's got to be him. Definitely.
