It should be a downhill stroll at this point except for one major kick in the nuts—the last batter is the other team’s best hitter. I can tell the second I hear the crack of the bat that this is going to be a hard hit. I race to catch it, all of the adrenaline and focus I’ve been storing up propelling my body forward, faster than I thought I could run. Every thought of the past few months that I’ve used to motivate me comes racing along with me—Jane above everything else. I make a diving catch, snagging the ball.

I can’t remember turning it on. I bend down to pick up the book. It was his favorite, ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ by J. D. Salinger. He took it everywhere he went. The day I had to collect his things at the hospital, it was just this and an old jacket that once belonged to my dad. The book, old and worn, has scribbled handwriting inside, like it was written in a hurry before the thought was lost. I close my eyes and open it on a random page. I read the first quote I can find:

Leaving him alone as he was, that tall guy went on his own on the innermost bookshelves to find some interesting books. Finally, Ryan completed the book. The last chapter made him sad, but it had a beautiful ending. People should read it again and again. He snapped closed the book, leaving it on the table where he sat. He went to find a new book to read.

Zayden As soon as I got done showering, I hurried and dried my body and hair, put on my clothes and walk out the door. I see my little mate sitting in the chair I left her in but with a book in hand. I slowly walk over to her and lean on the back of the chair. I notice she is reading my favorite book. Though I have read it numerous times, it’s an epic book. I run my finger on the letters on the cover page of the book. The letters reads: THE OUTSIDERS. I sigh satisfyingly and begin my book. In a minute, I’m already lost in the world of ‘Ponyboy Curtis’, the book’s narrator.

“I want to tell you what kind of book it is. Not what the back cover says you’ve read that. What I think it actually is.” I looked at the room. “It’s a book about a man,” I said. “Specifically, a particular man his hands, his voice, the strong black tea he drank every morning for thirty years, the way he cried at my school graduation and didn’t pretend he hadn’t. The way he cooked on Saturday afternoons and believed, without sentimentality, that paying full attention to the small things was the substance of a life.” I paused. “It’s also a book about what happened to him. What was constructed and deployed against him by people who found him threatening and found it convenient to remove him. W
