The Citadel had never felt small to Aria before. It had always risen around her like something eternal. Stone veined with silver. Towers cutting into the sky like the bones of ancient gods. A place built to outlive doubt. Tonight it felt like a cage with polished floors. She stood at the balcony outside Damien’s war chamber, the wind dragging at her hair, carrying the scent of rain and iron. Below, the city lights flickered in restless patterns. Wolves moved through the streets in disciplined lines. Patrols had doubled. No one was saying the word war yet.

We had cut off the head of the snake, only to realize the venom had already been sold to our neighbor. "We have to hit the Citadel," Ashren stated, his claws extending slightly. "We have to cut the Architect out before he can build a new army." "You can't," Kaelen said. "The Citadel is an impregnable fortress, and you don't have an army to besiege it. If you attack, my father will use it as an act of war and glass the North from orbit." Kaelen stood up straight, smoothing the lapels of his borrowed uniform. He looked at me, his blue eyes devoid of their usual cynical amusement. They were the eyes of a King in waiting.

*** Xander's POV *** The eastern gate of the Obsidian Citadel was a masterpiece of military fortification. Heavy, reinforced titanium-steel doors, thirty feet high, etched with thousands of overlapping defensive shield runes. To any normal army, it was an impassable wall. To me, it was just a monolithic server begging to be crashed.

The Great Stone was a massive slab of white quartz that sat at the highest point of the Citadel’s inner sanctum. It was the place where Alphas were crowned, where mates were bonded, and where, five years ago, Kael had shattered the world with a single sentence of rejection. Tonight, the stone looked like an altar under the bruised, purple sky.

We stepped out onto the apocalypse. The roof of the Citadel was a jagged plateau of shattered glass, twisted steel, and the smoldering wreckage of the Aegis Destroyer we had dropped on it earlier that night. But in the center of the chaos, rising like a defiant middle finger to the cosmos, was the Transmission Spire.
