My heart raced not from desire this time, but from fear.
“You’re reckless,” I whispered. “And this… this isn’t just us anymore. Someone else is involved. Danger—real danger.”
“And you?” His gaze softened, almost tender, but edged with steel. “Do you care?”
“Yes,” I admitted. “I… care too much.”
His smirk returned, slow, predatory. “Good. That’s what I wanted to hear. Some things… some people… aren’t meant to be safe. And you’re already part of the fire.”
