BEHIND OFFICE DOORS
The utterance sent an electrifying jolt through her.
Frozen.
Her frame stiffened and fingers curled slightly at her sides as if bracing for something unseen. Slowly, she turned her face toward the staircase, breath hitching at the thought.
Standing there was Fred.
Fred's eyes were on her: intense, unwavering. There was no sign of his usual charm today: no teasing smile, no quip. His features were unreadable, but for her, the very lack of warmth, the grimness of his set jaw and darkened eyes, sent ice drifting down her back.
