Pancakes, strawberries and maple syrup. I dug in. I had no appetite but I had to eat because of the nurse’s warning. I finished three out of four pancakes and finished the strawberries for nutrients. I only smiled. Near the end of the night, Vivian came to stand beside me by the window. Below us, Manhattan glittered. Across the skyline, the AsterDx sign glowed from the side of our new headquarters. Vivian lifted her glass. “So,” she asked, arching a brow, “how does it feel?” I looked at the city, at the company I had saved, at the life no one had managed to steal from me twice. Then I smiled. “Unreliable men are exhausting,” I said. “A good empire is much better company.”
