He promised to stop favoring Ruby and to keep his distance from her. However, it still bothered me. Ruby's existence was like a sword hanging over my head, and it had finally fallen! Coming back to my senses from the memories, I wiped the tears from the corners of my eyes and pondered, 'This is a good thing. Be decisive. I will never be hurt by love again. I will be my parents' little princess again once I return to the prairie.'

I paused for a brief moment before replying in a calm and peaceful manner, "Yeah, I won't be returning to the country. Please stop calling me, Zeke." I hung up the phone. I had basically severed all ties with him. I stared at the skyscrapers outside. From this point onward, Zeke Jones and I had nothing to do with each other. We would never cross paths ever again.

I looked at the blood spreading on the ground and at Zach's collapsed body, then at the frail and blind Jessica. I understood it all. This was Zach seeking redemption using Jessica. At the very end, Zach seemed to see me. His eyes were pleading. "Annie, now that I did this, will this make you feel any better?" As my own body faded, I realized this might be the last thing I would ever say. I looked right at him and gave a cold, cruel smile.

We sealed it with another kiss. And nothing was ever the same again. THE END OF BOOK TWO
