The Daughter They Wish Was Never Born
"Your father... the man you knew as Don Moretti... he wants to see you. One last time."
"His condition is very poor. The doctors say he might not make it through the night."
I looked out the window at the setting sun, stunned to hear his name again.
Now, he was just an old man, paralyzed in a bed.
"He keeps repeating your name, saying he wants your forgiveness," the nurse's voice was tearful. "Miss O'Connell, he's not going to make it through the night."
I was silent for a long time.
"I understand."
After hanging up, I continued to stare out the window.
