Fourteen lines, in the standard point-eleven font of the rest of the document, in the middle of a subsection that was otherwise about the conditions under which the merger agreement terms could be renegotiated. The kind of subsection that existed in long contracts as a technical scaffold, provisions for provisions, the legal equivalent of fine print nested inside fine print. I read it once quickly. Then I set the contract down flat on my desk.

The fine print on the contract was important—critical, even—but these unspoken terms were what truly mattered. “Okay,” she said, nodding slowly. “Let’s finish this.” Back at the table, the lawyers finalized the last details.
