It felt just like a massage—Ow!” Before he could finish, he yelped. This time, instead of hitting him, Lilian pinched his armpit. “Kiran, do you want me to prick you with your silver needle?” She began to reach for his needle. Kiran gave a start and shook his head frantically. “No! No thanks!”

I pricked the pad of my finger with the needle. A bead of blood welled up, round and bright. For a heartbeat, nothing happened. Then the bead glowed. Silver‑blue light flickered at the center of the drop, spidering out under the skin in fine lines. The twin‑crescent symbol ghosted into view at the base of my thumb, fainter than before but there. I sucked in a breath. “Okay,” I whispered. “Okay.” This time, instead of panicking, I focused. I pictured the light staying small. A pinprick. Not bursting out in a flare. Not drawing anyone’s attention.

Setting the feather aside, I reach for the pinwheel and an ice cube, the stark contrast between the two designed to overwhelm her senses.
