This might depend a bit on which 'first binding' you're talking about, as folks sometimes use it differently. I'm assuming you mean that first set of folks in 'The Atlas Six'? The core group is obviously the six new Magicians: Libby Rhodes, a powerful physic theorist who feels the pressure to be perfect, and her rival Nico de Varona, a natural talent with a chaotic charm. Then there's Parisa Kamali, a telepath who basically weaponizes intimacy, and Callum Nova, who manipulates emotions. Reina Mori is the naturalist, incredibly grounded and in tune with life forces, and Tristan Caine can see through any illusion.

They're all brought together by Atlas Blakely, who runs the Alexandrian Society. The dynamic is less about a single 'protagonist' and more about this volatile, fascinating ensemble. Honestly, Parisa and Callum's morally gray games often steal the spotlight for me, even though I'm more drawn to Reina's chapters. It's the friction between them all that drives the plot forward, especially the simmering tension between Libby and Nico.

Never actually finished that one. Got about a hundred pages in and the whole 'ancient, magical book that must never be read' premise felt like it was moving at a glacial pace for me. The main character is this innkeeper's son, I think, who stumbles onto the secret of the book and has to flee with a mysterious mentor figure.

It's all very much setting up a world of lore and a dangerous journey. The prose is dense, almost trying to be epic fantasy from page one, which some people love. For me, it lacked that initial hook to pull me through the slower world-building sections. I keep meaning to go back, but my to-read pile is a monster.

I picked up 'The Binding' by Bridget Collins expecting a typical fantasy standalone, but the whole experience left me a little confused about what it actually is. The hardcover I have doesn't mention a series, and the story arc with Emmett and the bookbinder felt pretty complete to me—he uncovers his past, deals with the fallout, and there's a sense of resolution. But then I heard whispers about a sequel called 'The Betrayals'? Turns out that's a separate novel in the same universe, not a direct continuation. So it's standalone in the sense that Emmett's personal journey is done, but the world continues. I'd call it a standalone with companion novels, which is sort of the best of both worlds if you ask me.

Honestly, I prefer it this way. I got a satisfying, self-contained story without a cliffhanger, but if I loved the magic system (which I did—the idea of binding memories into books is chilling), I have another book to visit that world again. It's not a series you have to commit to, which takes the pressure off.
