The water felt refreshing, but it didn't fail to remind my wounds of their presence any less. I slid my fingers through my hair before grabbing the untouched bar of men's soap, ignoring its scent and rubbing it on my body. "The cufflinks were taken by Elaine. She said she wanted to look at them. I didn't think much of it, so I let her. Later, she came back crying and said she'd accidentally lost them." He lowered his eyes. "I pretended not to care. However, after everyone left, I searched for them by myself for a long time." His voice grew quieter. "The dog had them. Someone found them in the doghouse. I took them back, cleaned them myself, and put them here." His fingers brushed the polished metal. "Laura… I never got the chance to tell you." A bitter smile touched his lips. "They're beautiful. Thank you. I really like them."

"Yes, Alessia. This is all Luca's fault, but he is still your fiance. Just say the word, and I'll make him return the ring and throw that wretch out at once." I looked at the farcical mess in front of me. Finally, I spoke. My voice was calm, but it cut through the dead silence of the hall. "The ring?" I slid off the black velvet glove, exposing my mangled, horrifying left hand. "Do you really think it could fit here?" The spotlight fell on my broken fingers. The room went silent for a moment, then a collective gasp erupted.
