The Gormenghast Trilogy Novels & Stories

The landscape was alien and foreboding, a surreal amalgamation of shifting shadows and fragmented structures that seemed perpetually on the verge of collapse. The air was thick with an unsettling stillness, broken only by the occasional whisper of forgotten memories. Each whisper was like a ghostly touch against her skin, a fleeting sensation that left her shivering. The whispers were disjointed, fragments of conversations, cries, and laughter that seemed to echo from the very walls of Nyxterra. They whispered her name in haunting, fragmented tones, urging her deeper into the darkness.

Just enough to know he had been looking toward me. His hand had reached forward before crimson mist swallowed him whole. I couldn't shake the feeling that it hadn't simply been another dream. It had felt... Real. "So," Gorm said, stretching his arms behind his head as though we were simply taking a pleasant afternoon stroll. "We're climbing the creepy death mountain." I glanced sideways at him. "You don't have to come." He snorted. "And let you wander into whatever fresh disaster you've managed to attract today?" I rolled my eyes.

So she cancelled that option "He's just lucky I need him" ****************************************** Austin found it difficult to close his eyes at night, what in God's name did he just do. A war with a ghost? "Urghhh" he muffled into his pillow as he pressed his face against it. "What is wrong with me!!"

We walk through the door into a large room, bookshelves lining all but one wall. A door off to the the left, with a staircase going to the second floor next to it. I glance at all the books, seeing too many to count. I look to the wall with no books. A fireplace burns bright in the middle of it with 2 large paintings hanging above it, one a man and one a wolf. My eyes stay glued to the paintings as I study them. One a man, and one a wolf. The man is painted to be tall, full of muslces. Hair blacker than night, with emerald green eyes staring right back at me. I look to the wolf, his fur the same as the mans hair, the saem emerald eyes starieng at me.

"They have, ever since she was born." Cassandra set the little serpent among the piles of gold coins. The creature sagged in defeat and exhaustion after lying before that terrible fire. "There it is," Vasilisa's voice came from behind a mountain of walnut-sized raw rubies. It wasn't hard to find the book. It was placed on a golden stand in between two golden Sirin statues. The grimoire turned out to be the largest book Cassandra had ever seen, with pages made of parchment illuminated with tracery, and it was open to a page thickly covered with elegant, intricate writing.

As Jonah and his parents plotted in the room, I turned around and rushed back home with a suppressed rage. I had to get all the family assets into my hands before Jonah took action. People in the countryside were still rather simple-minded. How could they have stolen my belongings and emptied the house? I rushed home and stuffed the money that I saved all these years into my underwear. Then, I located the wedding gifts I brought over when I married Jonah. I hid them in a wooden chest and snapped a lock on it before I finally felt at ease.

The smell of wet forest after a long rain and sun heated honey, wakes me from my sleep. I don’t know how many times I’ve tried to escape by now, but nothing I do seems to work. More and more wolves are going missing, if Tam’s growing hysteria is anything to go by.

The forest opens into a clearing, the stars shimmering silver along the path, and I pray this time it will be different. The wind grows colder as we delve deeper into the woods. Leaves rustle overhead, carrying wisps of smoke from the burning palace. The air is thick with ash and sorrow. I can still see the faint orange glow far behind us, lingering like the dying eyes of a creature that won't close. Martha stays silent, her arms clasped tight around me, each breath trembling against my back. I sense her heartbeat—steady yet strained—as she carefully leads the horse across a narrow stone bridge; the stream beneath glimmers like liquid glass.

“Let me pass? Like a spell?” Cole nods, reluctantly. “Something changed after the last skirmish twenty-two years ago. The border isn’t just enchanted anymore, it’s sentient. A living barrier. It can feel your presence. If you’re not invited in, you either get turned around… or worse.” Atlas’s jaw tightens slightly. “You should have led with that.” Cole shrugs, unrepentant. “I wasn’t sure she’d listen.” “I always listen,” I say sharply. “I just don’t always obey.”
