She opened a small cloth and showed them some button mushrooms with was the mushroom I used in the soup. Wait… those weren't the mushrooms I bought. These were destroying angels, just then, my heart began to beat faster and faster. Someone was framing me. “ These are the mushrooms I found in the kitchen. They are destroying angels and you can ask any top chef here, they'll be able to tell the difference,” she spoke confidently. Could she possibly be the one who had set me up?

Lusie fall in thinking of fear. In a summer camp just outside that town, people were having fun. Some were playing volleyball, some were swimming, some were gossiping with friends or family members standing or sitting on benches. Children were moving here and there. All were in fancy dresses. Deisy with her friends Zen and others were having some food sitting surrounding a table. They were talking loudly and laughing and poking each other.

It’s not a particularly good smell—no one would make a cologne out of it—but it eases my chest and makes me feel languid and weightless, like I’m floating in space. I’m hardly paying attention as Justus takes all the books out of the crate to get a hardback at the very bottom. I hadn’t noticed it earlier. It’s an old children’s book. Thumbelina. The fabric cover is threadbare in places, and the gold embossed lettering is tarnished. I remember the story vaguely from the early years at Moon Lake Academy. It’s a human fairy tale.

Cerelia joins her, graceful and curious as always. We serve the food and a beat of silence follows. Maybe they’ll love it. Cerelia takes a bite of the mushroom surprise first. She chews. And chews. And chews. “Mm,” she says carefully. “Earthy.” Hilda forks the same dish into her mouth and immediately gags. “It tastes like someone boiled socks in chicken broth.” Arlo scowls. “I sautéed those mushrooms.” Hilda laughs, “In what? Vengeance?” Erik nearly chokes on his wine. Chris bites his lip to hide a smile and Elliott doesn’t bother concealing his grin.

After I got over my bout of mortification, we talked for a little bit. “What did you think of the mushrooms?” Killian asked. “Did not care for them,” I answered, and proceeded to list all the messed-up phenomena I’d experienced – from the feelings of unreality, to the obsessively looping thoughts, to the complete inability to distinguish time. “Oh my,” Killian said sympathetically. “I’m sorry about that. (Migumi’s POV) I kneel in the soft earth, a piece of cloth spread on the ground. I’m currently picking wild mushrooms from the base of an old oak tree. Their caps are smooth and damp, a deep brown that tells me they’re safe to eat. The fox that slept with me last night was already gone when I woke up this morning. It honestly made me sad. The fox was a great silent companion. It gave me comfort for a short while. But I guess nothing stays forever. I try to push the feeling aside, focusing instead on gathering enough mushrooms to cook.

I had my shower, got dressed and took out my best novel. ‘Finding Damon’ It was a high school romance novel about supernaturals who fell in love but their differences set them on a path of deadly choices. I was down ten pages when dinner came in, It was a lady dressed in blue and white who brought the tray to my door. She looked so familiar, like one of my highschool seniors then, “Thank you,” I said, taking the tray from her. I munched down the food, finished it in less than five minutes and placed the tray back on the counter. When I went back to bed, the soft wind of the night blew over my face, sending me into a deep sleep unexpectedly.
